Katti Batti has some nice tracks slick production design, and stray moments of wit. But its merits are far outweighed by its numerous contrivances, and by its hollow writing that only appears modern on paper. The film’s inventive 4-minute opening scene shot on a handicam offers promise, but little that follows lives up to it.I’m going with two out of five for Katti Batti. It doesn’t say much about a romantic comedy if the smartest joke they could come up with is the name of a pet turtle.

On the whole, Katti Batti lacks the depth of an intense love story and also lacks entertaining moments. Its tension-ridden climax is another minus point, from the box-office point of view. It will end up as a losing proposal as it fails to not only entertain but also emotionally move the audience.

Somewhere between glossy ad, glassy music video, sitcom and masala movie, Katti Batti leaves you pouting. This could've had the lusty, gutsy power of a full-blown French kiss - it ends up a pleasant but passing peck on the cheek.

Ranaut has knocked it out of the park a couple of times while playing feisty, and is capable of mining real emotions even in the fakest of films. So it’s no surprise that the couple of bearable moments are hers, toplining a welcome sexually-unshackled spiritedness, and also when she, and the film, turns unexpectedly serious. But does the rest of it have to be so bubbly-‘thodi-si-paagal-ladki’ clichéd? Tell me, just what IS this?

Yet it’s criminal how Katti Batti squanders her abilities and takes the good will her recent work has generated to palm off ambiguous as avant-garde.For the sake of supporting cast there’s a scowling boyfriend turned business client turned groom-to-be, a token may or may not be gay best friend, a music band that offers unconditional support to the heartbroken in town, a nondescript daddy, a wheel-chaired mother, a nose-ring sporting kid sister adhering a fixed dress code of denim shirt and backpack and a tall lass in a conspicuous push-up bra.Too bad there’s not much to keep Katti Batti in place.

There are genuine heartfelt stories and then there are stories convoluted to an extent, because the filmmaker thinks will make it work. Unfortunately, Katti Batti falls into the latter category. It seems like Nikhil Advani was too taken in by the brilliance of a seed of story concept (Anshul Singhal) that he had no time to look into the necessary details. It really is frustrating to watch a fairly decent story being narrated by just skimming the surface and shockingly leaving out the little details that make them whole.

The plot is extremely poor and done-to-death and I wonder what tweaking was Nikhil Advani talking about. It draws slight inspiration from Sweet November but manages to come nothing close to it. Katti Batti is a stale, boring and insensible film that seems like a mockery at love and relationships, thanks to its crassness. In keeping with the efforts put by Imran Khan and Kangana Ranaut who are the only good things in this film.

The problem with Katti Batti is that it's trying so hard to be funny that it shows. It inserts gay jokes, a South Indian called Ramalingham who 'yems' and 'yens' everything and a gold-plated-speed-massaging-perfume-dispensing-commode worth 5 lakh rupees without any rhyme or reason. There are so many sequences that are written only for laughs, alas they fail to evoke any. The trailer says it's NOT a love story. The film is promoted with an interesting, twisted end. Err NOT! There is nothing new about the ending of the film. The only good thing about the ending was…that it ended.

Bollywood rom-coms are about boys and girls, who fall in love, sing and sway to fun songs, and suddenly start bickering about each other’s annoying weaknesses. They abruptly end their ‘happily ever after’ story only to be reunited again for the sake of love. It’s a standard format, and one that director Nikhil Advani claims to have tweaked cleverly for ‘Katti Batti’. Only, his trick, which comes at the very end, isn’t quite that unique, what with Hollywood filmmakers already investing in ‘Sweet November’ and ‘A Little Bit of Heaven’.

Katti Batti is not flawless. It takes too long to come to the point which eventually becomes its undoing. In dire need of good editing and funnier dialogues, the film nevertheless has its heart in the right place. With MSG 2 looming large this one seems to be the perfect lazy weekend watch. I’ll give it 3 QUINTS out of 5.

The leads are ill-matched and ill-suited for their roles. Ranaut, who has been praised beyond the skies for her recent turns in Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, is miscast as a sophisticated woman who knows the ways of men and the world. The humour misses its mark and the romantic entanglement rarely locks into place. This is a rom-com low on rom as well as com.
