What the film leaves you with are some meaningful questions. About career, parenting, ambition, and why we judge women more harshly than men when it comes to their outlook on these matters. Vidya Balan embodies her tireless spirit in a robust performance that is the best thing in this otherwise inconsistent film. The conflict between Shakuntala and her daughter is resolved most simplistically…which is not to say it isn’t a real conflict. But a film about a woman who possessed so much flair could’ve done with some flair in its telling.

Menon and the writers try hard to create a compelling portrait of a woman whose very existence defied patriarchy – even her sari and braids played a key role in breaking stereotypes. But the film fails to fully examine the tension between the clarity that Shakuntala Devi found in math and the messiness of her life. In a 1996 interview in Hong Kong, Shakuntala said: Nobody challenges me. I challenge myself. I wish her biopic had that same note of defiance and daring.

On the whole, Shakuntala Devi is a fair entertainer but it is more for the classes than the masses and more for the ladies audience than the males. Had it been released theatrically, it would have done well in select multiplexes mainly but average business overall.

Balan owns the material that she is given, course-correcting every time she tends to slip into being mannered. The supporting cast is fine. Sengupta works well with Balan, and Malhotra and Sadh, as the modern couple, feel right. The film, which stays determinedly cheerful even in the grey hues of London, slides into flatness here and there. The lines are perky but sometimes startlingly contemporary (did anyone say, for example, ‘let’s take this to the next level’, back in the 50s?). But then we slide right back: this is truly a Vidya Balan show, and she carries it off, with a glint in the eye, and a lilt in the step

Vidya Balan, playing Shakuntala Devi from the age of 25 to 70, misses nary a trick. With subtle shifts in diction, body language and gestural feints, she fleshes out a strong, feisty woman both endearing and awe-inspiring.Shakuntala Devi is an unmissable film and not just for the joy of watching Vidya Balan having a ball with numbers.

But ultimately ‘Shakuntala Devi’ is a joy to watch simply to soak in the fascinating life and times of the maths whiz – a human computer faster than an actual computer, the free-spirit, who was all that and so much more! Vidya Kasam, don’t give this one a miss.

Director Anu Menon who previously helmed the mature and sensitive Waiting and the forgettable London, Paris, New York, takes an aesthetic leap in storytelling with this one. While the incredible story of a woman who leans on her genius to elevate herself from her circumstances itself makes for celluloid success, leading the character assuredly to a point of self-realisation in about two hours is a feat no less. After all, movie watching during this lockdown has also become a numbers game: ‘how much time will it consume?’

SHAKUNTALA DEVI belongs to Vidya Balan without a shred of doubt. She has rarely disappointed and this flick is no exception. She owns the character and her style, comic timing, expression, hearty laugh etc, all contribute in making the performance superlative and award-winning! On the whole, SHAKUNTALA DEVI, despite the unconventional subject, works big time due to the execution and Vidya Balan’s award winning performance. Recommended!

Overall Shakuntala Devi is watchable and only making Vidya Balan the reason for it. Anu Menon (director) did her research well from the characterisation to the look, sequences and more. She knew what she got into and made it visually palatable on the screen.

All said and done, though Shakuntala Devi has Vidya Balan’s performance as a big positive, it also comes with many glitches. If you don’t watch this as a biopic, there’s a better chance you won’t nitpick as many things as I did.

SHAKUNTALA DEVI STORY:

The extraordinary story of Shakuntala Devi, the world-renowned mathematician who lived her life on her own terms. While the film pays tribute to her genius as a mathematician, it also humanizes her as a woman and mother, in trying to capture her indomitable spirit. Told through the lens of her relationship with her daughter Anu, the film highlights their very different struggles and aspirations.
