Welcome to New York, starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha and Karan Johar, isn’t merely a bad film, or even a terrible one. It’s depressing. Not because the plot is all over the place (it is!), not because the actors appear to be doing whatever they like (they are!), and not because it has no vision or ambition (it doesn’t!) – but because it’s an exercise in sheer pointlessness. Really, this film has no reason to exist.

There are maybe two or three other such moments in this film. The rest of it is an incoherent mess. Actually, Welcome to New York doesn’t feel like a film. It plays out more like an extended skit or a school play. It feels like the director Chakri Toleti made up scenes as he found actors to enact them and the actors just improvised. So Rana Daggubati playing himself is trying to get rid of the Baahubali hangover and become a romantic star. Salman Khan flexes his biceps. Riteish Deshmukh is the best – during a mani-pedi, he tries to suck up to Karan and get work. A running joke is that he gets paid much less than Karan to host.

Chakri Toleti’s direction is veritably weak. To begin with, he has a terribly poor script in his hands, and to add to it, his narration is hardly of the kind which will keep the audience hooked. On the whole, Welcome To New York has only a few comedy scenes post-interval but that will not be enough at all. It will go largely unnoticed at the box-office.

The laughs are few and far between and most scenes and dialogues which manage to tickle the funny bone involve Karan and Riteish. The biggest let-down is the script and the various tracks in the narrative don’t always come together as a whole and seem contrived. The visual effects in the film are also tacky, to say the least. Actual footage from the awards show doesn’t blend in seamlessly with the portions which were shot later. The film must have sounded clever on paper as it doesn’t take itself too seriously and attempts to recreate the irreverent tonality, characteristic of the banter at award shows. However, it doesn’t always manage to hit the bull’s eye.

The film is a torturous endorsement of IIFA. The only question popping up in your mind is, 'What is it?' Is it a film or a fancy documentary on IIFA Awards in New York. Enter the theatre at your own risk or at least carry a punching bag along with you if you are unfortunate to see it.
