The film is hard-hitting and uncomfortable to watch, and mixes dark humor to a tale about the dirty drug and political nexus in Punjab. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab. The censor furore dragged it into controversy for the wrong reasons, but I recommend that you watch it for the right ones. This is uncompromised cinema – the film has its highs and lows, but delivers a solid kick.

On the whole, Udta Punjab is a dark film but yet, it is an entertaining fare. It may be for a limited audience only, but the size of the target audience is big enough to see the film cross the average mark and generate profits. This, despite the fact that revenues from sale of satellite rights will be very limited. Business in Punjab will be excellent for obvious reasons.

The former, a huge star in Punjab making his Bollywood debut here, is very good. He adds enormously to the authenticity and heft of the film. The latter falters a little with her Bihari accent, but the way she channels the pain and the incredible strength of a young woman stuck in a terrible place, is searing. She soars.

Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab is littered with standout scenes, but none matches the sledgehammer impact of the climax. .The liberal use of cuss words may be too grating for some ears. Udta Punjab is not family entertainment, but it is an undeniably magnificent - and purposeful - commercial Hindi film. Do not miss it.

First things first - UDTA PUNJAB is a dark and serious film. Also the film's screenplay  jumps through multiple stories at the same time making it complicated. As the film progresses however, it does seem to slip in parts, especially in the second half. In an attempt to narrate multiple parallel stories, Abhishek Chaubey struggles to keep it engaging in the latter half of the film. On the whole, UDTA PUNJAB is a dark and serious film that does not offer the traditional entertainment that audiences seek from Bollywood movies. At at same time, it is bold and brave in parts with strong performances by all actors.

The film opens with a jaw dropping scene when a big packet of drugs is casually flung over by a discus thrower from the other side of the border to be picked up by a 'business' partner in Punjab. This, sets the tone for the rest of the film, which slowly and disturbingly unravels the horrors of the deep and prevalent drug menace in the state.Walking out of the theatre, one is grateful that the filmmakers fought for this film. This had to be served undistilled, and untouched by people who don't see or choose not to see the gravity of the situation.

The film is trying to open our eyes to the drug menace, but the first half of the film seems confused about where it is pitched -- dark comedy or preachy drama -- and, as a result, feels a bit long in the tooth. It is in the second half, after the preachiness has made way for plot, that Chaubey's finesse comes to the fore and the film gleams with originality. The leaps forward are unexpected, the narrative choices brave, and the detailing exquisite. Udta Punjab truly soars when being its own madcap beast, profane and powerful and preening.

The film is sometimes too indulgent and sluggish. Also this is not your sunny-side up cinema. It is stark and makes you cringe. However, its victory lies in making you empathise with its characters. As Alia and Shahid, both victims of drug and physical abuse fight their demons and destinies, you shed a silent tear. Shahid has got his act pat but Alia beats everyone hollow. Kareena and Diljit are adept. This review also doffs a hat to the nuanced performances of Satish Kaushik, Prabhjyot Singh and Manav Vij. Important: A lot of the dialogues are in Punjabi but the subtitles help.

The first half of the film scores high on the screenplay as it seamlessly shifts from one character’s story to the other, taking us through Punjab’s gorgeous houses and fields. The second half, however, loses its focus, like most Hindi films, and starts addressing love stories. On one hand, it’s heartwarming to see human connections that can happen at most unlikely places but alas the film derails from what it set me up for. The ending of the film also feels a bit abrupt. But how else could a film end when the battle against drugs is still on? I think we all must watch Udta Punjab and educate ourselves.

Unleashing the issue of substance abuse in Punjab in quite a startling manner, Udta Punjab takes a gripping start. The stress on Punjab soon becoming another Mexico is quite validly portrayed. The curse of the second half strikes for this film. Whatever engages you pre-interval, is outstretched into a fictional set up in the second half.

The subject behind Udta Punjab — drug addiction and the nexus between politicians and drug lords — is grim and can be dull; the women take charge in this one. Credit is due to Chaubey for taking a grim subject and making it interesting. There are a few dull moments in the second half, but the climax packs a punch. The way the worlds of a cop, a heroin addict, a rock star and a doctor intersect is cleverly shown. Be sure to give Udta Punjab a shot.
